Why use a Catchment Passport©?

  • To grasp the water situation of a catchment in a condensed and strategic way, often in relation to a commodity of interest.
  • To understand and use local water language, local catchment delineation, local metrics and local water balance.
  • To understand water stewardship catchment opportunities.
  • To communicate strategic messages between the sustainability and the commercial departments in your company.
  • To empower you when involving value chain partners around this catchment discussion, like growers or retailers.
  • To validate and contextualize global water stress catchment indicators such as BWS
  • To complement a catchment water risk assessment.
  • To identify opportunities to drive catchment resilience through collective multistakeholder action
  • To open up communications and engage with catchment stakeholders.

Can I use a Catchment Passport myself?

Sure, you can use it yourself. We offer the expertise to put it together and to transfer knowledge to you. Usually, catchment data, reports and information are publicly available, but it requires deep water expertise to produce the water intelligence that provides the strategic and actionable edge. You can use it to engage your value chain partners (growers, agri groups, retailers), or catchment stakeholders. You can also use it internally to inform your procurement colleagues in an efficient way about the catchment situation, so that you can make sourcing taking water into account.

What is a Catchment Passport©?

A Catchment Passport is a concise document that uses a geographic approach and addresses key general and regional info on local dynamics of water allocation and use. It condenses available data on the catchment water balance and it focuses on specific agricultural commodities. It details info for assessing and managing risks like ecosystems, social, climate change,  droughts and floods, groundwater situation, environmental flow requirements. It is a relatively short document that provides the basic info for joint catchment water stewardship engagement and action planning by stakeholders to move towards a sustainable catchment.
