Two days of learning, collaboration and action in MurciaGlobal agribusiness

On November 25th and 26th, we visited Murcia for an immersive experience, working alongside the Technical Office of Mar Menor from the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico, Fundación Biodiversidad, and researchers from Centro de Edafología y Biología Aplicada del Segura (CEBAS - CSIC). Representatives from 11 international retailers and food sector companies joined over 30 local stakeholders to explore challenges and solutions in the Campo de Cartagena and the Mar Menor basin.

On Monday, 25th November, a field visit expertly led by Gonzalo González Barberá (CEBAS-CSIC) provided insights into local agricultural systems, their connection to the Mar Menor, and impactful projects funded by Fundación Biodiversidad. From sustainable fertilisation and biodiversity promotion to erosion prevention, we saw practical solutions in action. A highlight of the visit was navigating the Mar Menor guided by experts from the Instituto Español de Oceanografía, who shared its history, evolution, and current challenges.

The following day, a Multistakeholder Workshop brought together diverse voices from the productive sector, international companies, research & academia, administrations, civil society and NGOs. We introduced the Collective Actions Programme, explored the Framework of Priority Actions for the Recovery of the Mar Menor and some of its projects working on Good Agricultura Practices and Nature-based Solutions, and engaged in a participatory session to identify pathways for adopting and upscaling better practices both on and off farm.
